Saponaria officinalis
(Sap-oh-NAR-ee-ah oh-fis-ih-NAH-lis)
Bouncing Bet, Soapwort

This herb is not only medicinal and edible, it also is useful in the perennial garden as a pretty plant that thrives in shady areas. Though it blooms best in sunlight, its good-looking foliage provides interest in shade, where few other plants grow. Pretty pale pink flowers bloom from spring to fall. It is easy to grow in well-drained soil, though it isn't particularly fussy. Use dry flowers in potpourri. Pick flowers for use in salads. You even can add flowers to beer to produce a head, or use in wash water as a water softener. Some people use solutions made from Soapwort to treat skin ailments. Cleaning materials (hence the name) can be made from the roots. You'll have few problems and lots of joy from this beautiful herb.
