Senna wislizenii
Canyon Senna,
Wislizenus Senna

This shrubby ornamental can take heat, drought, cold and neglect. Canyon senna, native to dry, rocky soils at high elevations in West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico, is the only true Texas native shrub senna. Its showy yellow flowers, about an inch long, bloom spring to fall, clustered on the tips of the branches. A pretty contrast with the dull, green leaves and dark branches. Water it deeply but infrequently; doing so helps it bloom more. Prune this deciduous shrub in winter to shape it, unless you don't mind its wide-ranging habit. Butterfly lovers: It is a host plant for Cloudless Sulphurs and Sleepy Oranges.

5-6' tall x 4-5' wide Sun Zones 7b-11 native butterflies
