Lantana camara

Multicolored Lantana

This tough-as-nails shrub can be the centerpiece of your summer garden. Lovely and delicately formed flower clusters bloom all summer on this quick-growing plant. The shrub, native to Central and South America, gets 4 feet tall and spreads 6 feet in my garden, making it an attractive accent plant or a mainstay of beds and borders. Butterflies and hummingbirds love the flowers. Lantana foliage is dense and ordinary-looking, with rough hairs and an offputting smell when crushed. So, don't crush them! The fruits are small, round, metallic-looking berries in fall. Leaves and stems get killed off by the first winter frost. Just cut the bush down to about 6 inches high and this fast grower will return to full height and glory each summer. The plant can cause skin irritation in some people, so wear gloves when pruning. Don't overwater; Lantana camara is very drought-resistant. A wonderful, easy-care beautiful bush.
