Sex in the Garden With Tex

Need some good natives? Plants, that is? Check out the Texas Discovery Gardens, at Fair Park in Dallas. I have volunteered before at the sale (in the heat of summer, God, not again) and the fall sale is much…milder. Here’s the link to that sale and to other weekend sales in D-FW.  

The newspaper of Dallas’ neighbor to the west offers a decent roundup of what to plant in fall. Most suggestions are the obvious ones, but some might get gardeners to pondering.

Let me know what you think about this list — specifically, are these plants “obvious” only to me, because I’m in the plant business, or are they new to you? Suggestions for plants that have been winners for you are also appreciated.

I asked the question, in the post titled Divide and Conquer Texas Perennials: Anyone have any good methods of division?

A commenter (thank you, Charlotte) has an interesting method:

“I have had better luck, deviding perennials, just digging of a peace with the spade. Chopping it in halv, leaving the last bit, just standing there.”

I never thought about that method of division. Seems like a timesaver, besides leaving good roots in the ground. My only reservation would be that older plants sometimes don’t bloom well unless they are divided, and the old, inner portion discarded. In your experience, has the method of division you cite invigorated the remaining plant?
