Salvia reptans
Chisos Mountain Sage
Like its cousin, Mt. Emory Sage, Chisos Mountain Sage has a tall, upright growing shape. But other than that, the two salvias are as different as blue and red. I found Chisos Mountain Sage at the Heard Science Museum’s plant sale. Blooms on the Chisos Mountain Sage are bright, electric blue (Mt. Emory’s are red). Its thin stems 3 to 5 feet tall reach for the sky. Small, tubular flowers sprout all along the stems and occur from July through late October. This is one deciduous perennial shrub that few other folks will have. Flowers are a nectar source for butterflies. It needs little water once established and can handle most well-drained soil types. To encourage bushier growth, trim it back in late winter. It reseeds readily.
