Hibiscus moschueutos
Crimson-Eyed Marshmallow

Crimson-Eyed Marshmallow, also known as Swamp-rose Mallow, is a departure for our nursery, because it doesn't grow in our hot, dry Blacklands Prairie without a lot of help. This cold-hardy perennial is a wetland creature. We got seeds for this beauty from a member of a Louisiana native plant group. Louisiana=wetlands, right? Anyway, Crimson-Eye is found in wetlands and rivers in the Southeast U.S. and does well anywhere along the Atlantic Seaboard. The name comes from the deep maroon eye that almost all variations of this plant have. Flower color is pinkish-white, and you can expect the lovely blooms from midsummer to early fall. Use these plants near water, or a bog, or areas that get a lot of sprinklering. The nectar appeals to several varieties of butterflies.
