Cherry Sage, Autumn Sage

This striking Texas native shrub can be the backbone of any low-maintenance, low-water garden. It loves heat and sun, and once-established needs little water. Its small, curling flowers are at their best in summer, when many other plants are too tuckered to bloom. it has an upright growth pattern, and its pale green evergreen leaves look good in winter when other plants have dropped their leaves. All you have to do to maintain it is to cut it back severely twice a year, in winter and in the middle of summer, with a pair of hedge clippers or pruners. That keeps it from looking woody. A bonus: When crushed, the leaves are aromatic. The leaves can be used to make tea or as a spice for soups and meats. -- Rick R.
