Justicia spicigera
Mexican Honeysuckle

Mexican Honeysuckle isn’t very common here, but that makes it more interesting. Justicia spicigera is better-known in South Texas and in the deserty areas of Arizona and Mexico. For low-water and xeriscape gardening, it’s a great pick. I found  this evergreen, perennial shrub at the Texas Discovery Gardens’ butterfly plant sale. Hummingbirds love the reddish-orange flowers, which bloom all summer, and butterflies will join in, too. Give it full sun for best flowering, though part shade is OK. Pinch back the tips to keep it neat and tidy. It dies to the ground but reliably returns in spring. You’ll need to protect it during prolonged freezes, though. Don’t worry about the summer heat, though; Mexican Honeysuckle loves it.
