Baptisia alba
White False Indigo
White False Indigo, also known as White Wild Indigo, takes its time developing, but it is worth the wait. This perennial takes a few years to establish itself; before then, it often looks dead or sickly. But once it is established, it lives for a very long time. The plant has a shrub-like, bushy shape with lovely rounded, blue-green color. The plant dies to the ground in winter. Because its limbs are spindly, mark the spot of the plant. In mid-spring in the Dallas area, the plant starts growing; stalks that resemble asparagus rise from the ground. After leafing out, lovely upright white flower stalks appear. In late summer, the large, bean-like seed pods hang from the stems. Besides its attractive flowers, leaves and shape, Baptisia alba is drought-tolerant. You might use it as a specimen plant, where its unusual characteristics will attract attention. Plant in well-drained soil. Don't transplant once you have it planted; its tap root won't like it.
4' tall by 4' wide Sun/part shade Zones 5-9
